Vaitheeswaran Koil – Temple of Healing
Vaitheeswaran Koil is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the sacred town of Vaitheeswarankoil near Mayiladuthurai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran, meaning “The Divine Healer”. It is strongly believed that prayers and rituals offered at this temple can cure diseases and bring physical and spiritual healing. The name "Vaitheeswaran" is derived from the Sanskrit words “Vaidya” (doctor) and “Ishvara” (God), symbolizing Shiva as the Supreme Healer. The temple attracts thousands daily, with many believing that Shiva’s grace cured diseases, especially skin ailments.
Uniquely, the main deity faces west, which is uncommon in traditional South Indian temples, where deities usually face east.

🏛️ Temple History
🔸 Ancient Origins & Chola Legacy
Vaitheeswaran Koil is an ancient temple with roots dating back to the early Chola dynasty. Significant expansions were carried out during the 12th century under the rule of Kulothunga Chola I, Vikrama Chola, Vira Rajendra Pandya, and later Nayak rulers. Inscriptions and stone carvings found in the temple complex highlight its importance through centuries of Tamil history and royal patronage.
🔸 The Myth of Angaraka’s Healing
According to temple legend, Angaraka (Mars) was afflicted with leprosy and performed intense penance at this temple. Lord Shiva, pleased with his devotion, appeared as Vaidyanathar (the Divine Doctor) and cured him completely. In gratitude, Angaraka is believed to have taken celestial residence here, making this temple a planetary remedy center for Mars-related doshas.
🔸 Siddhamirtham Tank – The Healing Waters
The temple’s sacred tank, known as Siddhamirtham Theertham, is believed to be infused with divine nectar. Taking a holy dip in this water is said to cure diseases and cleanse karmic impurities. Even today, thousands of devotees follow this ritual during their visit, offering jaggery, salt, and pepper as part of traditional healing ceremonies.
